Volleyball
Winning is a good feeling, but it passes and what lasts is what you have learned and the great memories you have made. Winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Working to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you have done is the point. Wanting to learn, grow, and improve is the point. Always making your best effort is the point.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Midlakes wins 2024 Class B2 Sectional Title
Despite what the seeds say, the Midlakes Screaming Eagles boys volleyball team defended its Section V Class B2 title from the rest of the competition.
The Screaming Eagles won the B2 title a year ago but after losing six seniors from the previous team, No. 2 Midlakes denied any letdowns during this year’s tournament. They upset the top-seeded School of the Arts SilverHawks in the Class B2 championship on Tuesday evening at Finger Lakes Community College to claim the crown for the second in a row.
The Screaming Eagles fought hard in a four-set victory: 25-12, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22.
“It’s nice to come back with a young group and be able come back out on top,” Midlakes head coach Kyle Salisbury said about clinching back-to-back sectional titles. “It was a challenging match in the finals, School of the Arts stepped up and it was awesome.”
Midlakes (13-10) lost only one set all tournament long, and that was the third set after a commanding two-sets-to- nothing lead. A 6-0 hole to open up the third set forced the Screaming Eagles play catchup for the entire set.
“We’ve lost a lot of sets this year so we’re pretty resilient,” Salisbury said. “We know we’re going to make errors but the key is if we can decrease enough of those errors to gain enough points to win the match.”
SOTA (15-4) continued to put pressure on Midlakes in the fourth set. After the Screaming Eagles jumped out to an 11-6 lead, the SilverHawks battled back, and junior Paul Stevens had a kill to even things up at 15-15.
But on the ensuing next two points, Midlakes junior outside hitter Aiden Bryant would connect on back-to-back kills to regain the lead for the rest of the match.
Bryant finished with 24 kills and six aces in the match and earned the Most Valuable Player award for the Class B2 tournament.
Bryant’s junior teammates Jake Deckert and Braxton Wilkes were also named to the all-tournament team along with Stevens, SOTA eighth-grader James Hamilton Laver, North Rose-Wolcott freshman Devon Britton and World of Inquiry senior Ke’vaun Callier.
Deckert would end his championship match with 10 kills while Wilkes finished with six digs.
For Midlakes captain Teddy Altman, it was a stellar first two seasons on the team after spending his previous falls on the Screaming Eagles’ cross country team.
Altman, who is Midlakes’ lone senior, added 24 digs and five aces in the championship win for his second sectional title in as many years. He also represented the team with lifting up the sectional brick during the postgame celebration.
“This is pretty nuts,” Altman said about his initial reaction on being a two-time sectional champion. “As a junior, I wanted to change it up and the volleyball team said they would love to have me.”
It was Altman, who was serving at the time to get his Screaming Eagles to that much-needed 11-6 lead in the fourth set after collecting three straight points off of his serve, forcing a SilverHawks timeout during that stretch.
“In the third set, we just got ahead of ourselves and in the fourth set, we buckled down and we got it done,” Altman said.
Altman not only stepped up as Midlakes’ lone senior, but he became the libero as well. And he played a big role in the championship-clinching fourth set until Bryant’s match-winning kill.
“It’s more a technique thing, less sloppy and more finesse and that shows resilience,” Salisbury said about his team’s fight in the fourth set to seal the championship win.
Midlakes advances to play Class B1-champion Spencerport in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B Play-In right back at FLCC on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Spencerport defeated Churchville-Chili in a thrilling five-set match at FLCC during the Class B1 final after the Screaming Eagles’ title.
Spencerport has been Midlakes’ final opponent in each of the last two years. They lost to Spencerport in the Class B semifinals in 2022 and were defeated by Spencerport in this same Class B state play-in just a year ago.
“I’d like to see us serve receive better,” Salisbury said about preparing for Spencerport. “Our serve receive today was good. We’re going to have to step up and be ready to go on the service. If we pass well, we can hang with anybody but if we don’t pass well and without our big swings, we’re not going to go too much farther.”
“It’s awesome, we’re hoping to do better this year,” Altman said about moving forward.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Midlakes wins 2023 Class B2 Sectional Title
The top-seeded Midlakes boys volleyball team defeated No. 3-seed Pavilion/York Golden Gophers in straight sets to claim the Class B2 Sectional championship.
The win was the team’s first title since 2019, and its 11th under Head Coach Kyle Salisbury.
“I have been on a lot of sports teams, and I’ve always wanted to win a sectional title,” said Kyle Kumkey, a senior on the team. “It’s a great group of guys and I’m excited to win it with them.”
Midlakes won 25-18, 25-17, and 25-22. The Screaming Eagles also swept Wayne in straight sets in the semifinal versus Wayne.
“Everyone does a great job in what they do,” said senior capital Brady Day.
Day was named tournament MVP. Aiden Bryant and Kaiden Ranger were named to the All-Tournament team.
“They really hold this team together, and we kind of just get on their back and let them go,” Kumkey said. “This team came together because it has such a great bond on and off the court. We still work as a team and do what we need to do to get it done.
“I’m happy we won and I’m happy to go celebrate with the guys now.”

MIDLAKES GIRLS WIN 2022 SECTIONAL TITLE
Girls Volleyball Wins C1 Title
NOV. 7, 2022 — The Midlakes girls volleyball team defeated top-seeded Aquinas Institute in a back-and-forth match for the Class C1 Championship that featured a huge swing in the closing sets to bring the Screaming Eagles its first sectional title since 2014.
Already down 2-1, Midlakes found itself trailing 16-12 in the fourth set when it sparked a six-point rally to take the lead and eventually the set, 25-20. The Screaming Eagles kept up the pressure to win the fifth set, 15-13, and the sectional title.
"I told them we haven't taken a team to five sets all year,” said senior co-captain Callie Walker. "It's gotta be this team. This is not going to be our last game. It might be a fight, but let’s take them to five."
Third-year head coach Matt Marchaesi led the No. 2-seeded Screaming Eagles into the championship game after finishing the regular season 14-7 and then defeating Bath-Haverling and Wellsville in sectionals.
"Our team is such a fun team to coach," Marchaesi said. "We definitely improved. We got more skill, but our mental game is so much stronger. We can come back. We can work together and that is the biggest piece this year."
Senior libero and co-captain Nauvoo Dorr was named tournament MVP. Hanna Godkin, Midlakes third co-captain, was named to the All-Tournament team along with senior Kayla Nurse.
Nurse said a key to the game was simply trying to stay positive and keeping their energy, even when it looked bleak.
"We did it. We made it," Nurse said after the game. "This team is my second family. I just really love them so much … It's not over yet."
