
Class of 2025

The Midlakes Athletics Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2025, which will join its 2026 inductees for during the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, expected to be in September 2026.
A trio volleyball stars make up the 2025 class, with 2009 graduate EJ Wells-Spicer joined by classmate Dan Mowery and 2005 alum Joe Petzoldt.
"We are excited to welcome these three outstanding student-athletes for induction into the Midlakes Athletics Hall of Fame,” said Rick Ciciarelli, chair of the selection committee. "They all had a profound impact on the athletic program - and specifically the boys volleyball program - at Midlakes High School, marked by excellence in competition, success in the Sectional tournaments, and as school representatives.”
A committee of former coaches, administrators, and community supporters considers individual athletes, teams, and exceptional contributors for induction into the Hall of Fame. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years after they graduate.
Here’s a closer look at the 2025 inductees.
EJ WELLS-SPICER
EJ Wells-Spicer is arguably the best volleyball player to come out of Midlakes' programs. A five-year varsity star, he finished as the all-time leader in assists (2,164)
Wells-Spicer was named Finger Lakes First Team All-League four times, and was twice recognized as an All-Greater Rochester First Team and twice honored as the AGR Player of the Year (2008, 2007). He was named the Section V Class B Most Valuable Player twice (2007, 2006). As a sophomore, he was selected to play on the Empire State Games Western NY volleyball team and won a silver medal.
His senior season, EJ posted 32 kills and the lead the team in assists (536) and added 32 aces and 122 digs. He was the assist leader during his junior-year campaign, delivering 443 assists, along with 65 aces, 85 kills and 75 digs.
After his time at Midlakes, Wells-Spicer went on to play at Nazareth University, leading that program in assists with 4,762 over his four-year career.
Wells-Spicer was previously inducted with the 2007 Boys' Volleyball team as part of the Halls' 2024 Class, and the 2006 Boys' Volleyball team during the Class of 2017 inductions.
DAN MOWERY
Dan Mowery was a five-season volleyball standout and key server during Midlakes' landmark win over Victor High School in 2004, leading to a League Championship. He was twice named Finger Lakes All-League First Team, and twice earned First-Team nominations to the All-Greater Rochester team. Mowery was a Section V Class B All-Tournament Team nominee in 2007.
His senior year, Mowery recorded 148 kills and 182 assists, and was the team-leader in digs (126).
Mowery went on to play volleyball at Nazareth University after his career at Midlakes concluded.
Mowery was previously enshrined as part of the 2007 Boys' Volleyball team recognized the Halls' Class of 2024, and the 2006 Boys' Volleyball team during the 2017 inductions.
JOE PETZOLDT
A four-year varsity leader, Joe Petzoldt was a force at the net. In his final three seasons, he compiled a total of 702 kills, leading the team in the statistical category during each of those campaigns. In each of those years, he was a First Team nominee to the Finger Lakes All-League lists. His sophomore and seanior seasons, he was named to the Section V Class B All-Tournament teams. His senior year included a total of 317 kills.
Petzoldt went on to play at Nazareth University, ranking in the top five each season on the team in aces, kills and digs.
Anyone wishing to nominate an athlete or team to the Hall should go to the Midlakes web site and click on Athletics, Hall of Fame, Nomination Forms. All nominations should be sent to the Hall at Midlakes High School and must be received before November 1, 2025. Induction ceremonies for both the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 and 2026 will be scheduled for the fall of 2026.
